Bingo is a particularly special cat as he belongs to our nurse Cat. Unfortunately Bingo was recently involved in a road traffic accident and came in one evening with a broken back leg. Initially we gave Bingo some pain relief so we were able to take some x-rays of his leg.
His x-rays showed that he had not fractured his pelvis but that two of the bones in his leg, his tibia and fibula were broken.
In order give Bingo the best chance of his leg healing he needed surgery. An orthopaedic surgeon came to Hollybank to carry out Bingo’s operation. He placed a pin down the middle of one of the bones to hold it straight, as well as a metal plate to hold the fracture together whilst it healed. Screws held the plate in place.
Although the staples were taken out of his skin wound after 10 days fractures can take 6-8 weeks to heal. Therefore whilst his leg was healing Bingo had to have strict rest (as well as lots of TLC). He also continued some pain relief to keep him comfortable.
8 weeks later we took some further x-rays to assess how Bingo’s leg was healing. The orthopaedic surgeon was please with Bingo’s progress, however healing was not quite complete so he has continued his cage rest. We will take some more x-rays of Bingo in a few weeks. In the mean time he is making the best of his recuperation, making sure he is well supplied with catnip and the occasional treat.
