Your cat will be less worried if the carrier smells familiar and they are used to seeing it

Try leaving the carrier out in the house for your cat to use as a bed rather than only bringing it out for a planned trip. You can take the door off or leave it open for your cat to come and go as they like

Put bedding in the carrier that your cat normally sleeps on

Familiar scent can be added by placing an item of clothing belonging to your cat’s favourite person in the carrier

Gently wipe a soft cloth around your cat’s face to pick up its scent and rub this around the carrier, especially in the corners, and then leave it in there. This transfers your cat’s own pheromones to the carrier which can help make them feel more secure

Spray the carrier with a synthetic cat pheromone spray at least 15 minutes before putting your cat in it

Plan ahead and stay calm. If your cat panics at the sight of the carrier try wrapping them in a thick towel or bed and gently but quickly placing them in the carrier. Top opening carriers work well for this, if using a front opening carrier try putting your cat in bottom first rather than headfirst

Bring a spare bed or towel in-case of accidents

We have cat carrier covers available at reception if your cat would like some privacy whilst in our waiting area
